peacock featherFollowing on from the successful Oxford Embroidery Weekend last year, the Royal School of Needlework in conjunction with Paramount Special Events are pleased to invite you to a special embroidery weekend on the English Riviera in Torquay. Based at the luxurious Paramount Imperial Hotel, the theme of the weekend will be ‘Embroidery and the Arts & Crafts Movement’. Kate Sinton will lead the weekend which will incorporate stitching a design with elements taken from embroideries in the RSN Collections, a visit to a famous Arts & Crafts house and a lecture given by our Archivist, Dr Lynn Hulse.

Your Embroidery Tutor Kate Sinton completed the RSN three-year Apprenticeship in 2002 and now pursues a career as an embroidery artist and teacher. She has a real passion for embroidery as an art form and frequently teaches Royal School of Needlework courses. Kate also works at St. Paul’s Cathedral in the City of London as the Textile Project Supervisor.

Your Lecturer Lynn Hulse is a professional historian and archivist. She has published widely in scholarly journals and is the joint editor of two collections of interdisciplinary essays. As well as managing and cataloguing the RSN’s collection of manuscript and printed records, photographs and original designs, she is writing a history of the Royal School of Needlework from its foundation in 1872 up to the present day.

Friday: You can check into the Paramount Imperial Hotel from 3pm onwards. A welcome drink and introduction to the weekend is followed by dinner with wine.

Saturday: Breakfast is followed by a morning of stitching and after lunch there will be a visit to the National Trust property Coleton Fishacre a wonderful Arts & Crafts style house in Kingswear. Saturday night dinner with wine is in the Regatta restaurant with its stunning views across Torbay. Dr Lynn Hulse will then give an illustrated lecture on the The Royal School of Needlework and the Arts & Crafts Movement.

Sunday: After breakfast the morning will be spent stitching with a coffee break and Traditional Sunday lunch. Stitching with tuition continues in the afternoon with a tea break. The weekend comes to a close at 4pm.

The Imperial Hotel, Torquay was built in 1866 this splendid Victorian hotel is steeped in history. The hotel has entertained a host of noteable guests, Emperor Napoleon III, the Queen of Holland and of course Agatha Christie.

The embroidery programme includes 2 nights’ accommodation with full English breakfast, Friday and Saturday dinner with wine in the hotel restaurant, tea and coffee each day, Saturday and Sunday lunch, reception drinks, Saturday visit and guided tour, workshops, lectures and Saturday coach transfers.

Booking Conditions: You will be asked for a deposit of £40 each at the time of booking. The balance is payable 28 days before the event. Sorry but your deposit cannot be refunded to you unless through special circumstances.
